Abstract: Aims and objectives of the study: 1) To study the incidence of eclampsia at Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara (SDM ) Medical College & Hospital ,Sattur, Dharwad, Karnataka. 2) To study the clinical profile,maternal and perinatal outcome in eclamptic patients. 3)To study the effect of MgSo4 by Zuspan's regimen in eclampsia which is been used in our hospital. Methods: Analysis of case records of all eclampsia cases from the study period of January 2006 to September 2012, a retrospective study.

Abstract: Hearing loss and deafness is a disability affecting millions of people. Hearing aids and cochlear implants are the only available solutions to overcome this disability. They are at best sophisticated amplifiers of sound and nothing beyond it. The objective was to test if Massaging Pressure Therapy in addition to nerve enhancing Homeopathic medicines could positively benefit those suffering from sensorynueral hearing loss. The patients were from a large cross section with varied ages, symptoms and causes of hearing loss and were suffering from mild to profound hearing losses due to various congenital and acquired impairments in the middle & inner ear and diagnosed as sensory neural hearing loss Clinical trials were conducted with diagnosis based on pre audiometry tests which determined the hearing thresholds. The therapy involved massaging the temperoparietal region with a small steel sick to activate the nerve cells in the cochlea. The outcome was measured in decibel levels denoting hearing thresholds. Pre audiometry and post audiometry reports were compared to arrive at the result.

Abstract: In India head & neck cancers account for 30 -40 % of cancers at all sites. In Ahmednager district of Western India, where this study was conducted tobacco related oral cancer is very common which may be due to widespread habit of chewing tobacco. The lack of any study in this regard & alarmingly high prevalence of head & neck cancers in this part of India prompted us to take up this study. A retrospective study on prevalence of cancer in various head & neck regions like oral cavity, larynx, oesophagus, oropharynx, nose ¶nasal sinuses, thyroid gland, salivary gland, nasopharynx,facial skin, eye & ear was conducted in Dept. of Otorhinolaryngology Pravara Rural Hospital,Loni. from June 2008 to December 2011 .This study hopes to quantify & analyze the spectrum of head & neck cancers & should help as a starting point for a much needed population based study in this region . A comprehensive effort is needed to identify cause of such high prevalence & generate awareness among general masses .

Abstract: The ultimate goal of periodontal therapy is regeneration of tissues destroyed by periodontal disease. Previously, various bone graft materials have been tried for management of osseous defects resulting from the disease process. However, the trend has now shifted towards application of endogenous regenerative therapy. The recent introduction of Choukroun's Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF), has revolutionalized the field of dentistry. PRF, a rich source of autologous growth factors and cytokines, is an upcoming therapeutic approach in the management of periodontal osseous defects. Combination of autologous PRF and the otherwise commercially available bone grafts holds a promising potential of enhanced bone regeneration.

Abstract: Temporomandibular joint ankylosis is inability to open mouth due to either a fibrous or bony union between the head of the condyle and the glenoid fossa. It is most commonly associated with trauma, local or systemic infection, tumors or systemic disease such as ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis, or psoriasis. Odontogenic keratocyst as defined by World Health Organization are known for their peculiar behavior, varied origin, debated development, unique tendency to recur, and disputed treatment modalities. The prevalence of mucosal retention cysts in the maxillary sinus varies considerably from report to report, perhaps as a function of population, geography and season. The detection and correct interpretation of the retention cyst is important for preventing unnecessary diagnostic procedures or surgical intervention. We report a case of temporomandibular joint ankylosis with incidental finding of odontogenic keratocyst and mucous retention cyst

Abstract: A partially edentulous ridge may retain the general shape of the alveolar process. Such a ridge is traditionally referred to as a normal ridge. The smooth contours of this normal ridge create problems for restorative dentist. In a fixed bridge, the pontics frequently give the impression that they rest on the top of the ridge rather than emerge from within the alveolar process & lack marginal gingivae & interdental papillae. Black triangles, which almost always interfere with dentofacial esthetics, are present in the embrasure area between the pontics & between the abutments & the pontics. In other words, it may be difficult or impossible to produce a fixed prosthesis which truly restores the esthetics & function of the natural dentition. The localized alveolar ridge defect refers to the volumetric deficit of the limited extend of the bone & soft tissue within the alveolar process. Such type of ridge defect can be corrected by surgical ridge augmentation that can be accomplished by the addition of either soft or hard tissues. This article describes a procedure of surgical connective tissue augmentation of a localized deficient alveolar ridge in the maxilla, followed by fixed partial denture, enhancing the esthetics, function & health.

Abstract: Objective: Caryophyllus aromaticus mill L (Caryophyllus aromaticus) is a herbal spice plant that has several therapeutic effects. It also heals depression, grief, nervous stress and tension. In the present study we evaluated antidepressant-like effect of Caryophyllus aromaticus using forced swimming test (FST). Material and Methods: Three doses of ethanolic extract (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg) was injected intraperitoneally. After 30 min of injection, immobility and swimming times were measured and compared with control (negative control) and imipramine (positive control). Results: The results showed that higher dose (200mg/kg) of extract significantly increased swimming time and decreased immobility time. However, the two lower doses of extract (50 and 100mg/kg) also had significant effect on these parameters.

Abstract: Growth of residual renal tissue in response to loss of other renal tissue is termed as compensatory hypertrophy. The functional adaptation is characterized by an increase in GFR which began 2 weeks after unilateral nephrectomy due to growth of the remaining kidney. Although increases in total renal weight have been reported in 24 hours, the total increase of about 50% in mass following unilateral nephrectomy is not achieved for 2 to 4 weeks. The degree of loss of renal mass is a key determinant of compensatory growth. Aim of this study is to observe the rate and extent of recovery in renal function in the post donation period after kidney donation. The objective is to follow the progressive changes in three parameters of renal function namely plasma creatinine level, plasma urea level and the creatinine clearance values in the preoperative and in different stages of post- donation period. 18 renal donors, 12 females and 6 males, who were closely related to recipients, were selected. This study was done in renal donors attending the nephrology department in Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, Madras Medical College, Chennai - 03. After obtaining written consent from donors the study was done after eliciting a proper history.

Abstract: Fibrinolytic therapy can be used for complicated pleural effusions or empyema without the need for operative intervention. Intrapleural administration of Fibrinolytics prevents intrapleural organization and loculation. However, the success of this therapy has provided a strong rationale for the continued utilization of fibrinolytic therapy to address extensive intrapleural loculation and lung entrapment .Over the last several years; additional studies were done to explore the efficacy and safety of intrapleurally administered Fibrinolytics.

Abstract: The present study aimed to evaluate the alkaline tolerance ability of Enterococcus faecalis; one of the most commonly isolated bacterium from failed root canal treatments. E. faecalis was grown in Brain heart Infusion (BHI) broth and maintained at different alkaline conditions (pH); its ability to form biofilm in polystyrene plates was assayed by O'Toole method. Intracanal irrigants sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX) and MTAD were used to evaluate the suppression of E. faecalis biofilm. The data obtained was statistically analysed by Anova and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. E. faecalis was able to survive and form biofilm at all tested pH range (7.3-12.3). 2% NaOCl and 1% CHX were highly effective in suppressing E. faecalis biofilm whereas MTAD had limited activity.
