Abstract: This work sought to investigate the presence of BPA in water placed in some plastic drinking water bottles and baby feeding bottles obtained randomly in the Kenyan market using polyaniline/ bentonite modified glassy carbon electrode biosensor. The aim was to analyse the levels of BPA that leached from the bottles when water maintained at known temperature and time was analyzed. The control consisted of the same water placed in similar bottles but made of glass at the same time and temperature. The hypothesis of the work was that BPA would leach into the water from the plastic bottles. The BPA content was investigated using electrochemical methods. Abstract: Commercial samples of carbonated soft drinks viz, Sprite and Mirinda from three different batches were studied using UV-Vis spectrophotometry to find out the presence of preservatives. The average quantity of sodium benzoate ranged on 168 to 175 μg/ml in Sprite and 396 to 398 μg/ml in Mirinda samples. The correlation coefficients of the calibration curves of sodium benzoate were found to be 0.9985. The mean recovery of sodium benzoate was 87.7 %. The method detection limit and method quantification limit for sodium benzoate was 0.02 and 0.05 mg/L and evaluated to formation of benzene in sample. The present work can be successfully applied for the study of sodium benzoate in commercial carbonated soft drinks.

Abstract: Tetracyclones have been submitted to Diels-Alder reactions with alkynes to give oligoarylbenzenes. The reactions were performed under diverse conditions, such as in diphenyl ether, under solventless conditions and under microwave irradiation. Also, 3-substituted benzo[b]thiophene S-oxides and benzo[b]thiophene S,S-dioxides have been subjected to [4+2]-cycloaddition reactions with alkynes and alkenes to give aryl substituted extended aromatic systems.

Abstract: The reactions of the Schiff base N'-(5-bromo-2-hydroxybenzylidene)nicotinohydrazide (H2bhbn), with metal transition ions (Mn (II), Fe (II), Co (II), Ni (II), Cu (II) and Zn (II)) afforded two different types of complexes formulated as [M(H2bhn)2(Cl)2(H2O)x].(H2O)y (M: Mn, Co, Ni or Zn) and [M(Hbhn)(Cl)(H2O)x] (M: Fe or Cu). These compounds have been characterized by elemental analysis, UV–Vis, IR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies, molar conductivity and room temperature magnetic measurements. The structure of Zinc (II) complex has been determined by X-ray crystallography. The complex crystallizes in the monoclinic system with Cc space group, a = 25.8196(11) Å, b = 7.2881(3) Å, c = 17.4662(8) Å, β = 120.566(2)°, V = 2830.0(2) Å3, Z = 4, R1=0.0355 (0.0384) and wR2=0.0922. The environment geometry around the Zn (II) center is best described as a slightly distorted tetrahedral..........

Abstract: Olive kernels were crushed, ground and screened to be subsequently subjected to thermal analysis in nitrogen at four different rates ranging from 5 to 20 ᵒC.min-1. TGA and DTG traces revealed that the combustion process occurs on three steps, the last one ending at about 900 ᵒC leaving 1.6% ash. The kinetics of the first two steps were elucidated using three non-isothermal methods of analysis, namely, Flynn – Wall – Ozawa iso-conversional method, Kissinger method and Coates – Redfern method. The activation energy of each step was calculated using the three methods and the controlling step determined through the third method..

Abstract:The Litsea deccanensis leaves (LDL) extract acted as a corrosion inhibitor for mild steel (MS) in 1N HCl medium. The various techniques handled were weight loss measurement, electrochemical studies, FTIR and surface analysis etc. The inhibition efficiency was increased as increasing the concentration of Litsea deccanensis extract. The electrochemical technique proved that the plant extract actedas a mixed type of inhibitor. The temperature studies stated that as the temperature increases the corrosion rate decreases and also obeyed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The surface analysis proved that the protective film of adsorbed layer was formed on the metal surface and the composition of the surface was evaluated using EDX. Organic moieties present in the extract was examined by FTIR analysis..

Abstract: A novel technique calledIonophoretic technique has been used for the study of stability of binarycomplex of Fe(III)-Maleic acid and ternary complexes of Fe(III)-Maleic acid –EDTA. A graph of Absorbance difference against pH is plotted for binary complex and Absorbance difference against –log [EDTA] is used to obtained information on the formation of mixed ligand complexes and to calculate the stability constant. The stability constant of Fe(III)-Maleic acid and Fe(III)-Maleic acid –EDTA complexes have been found to be 4.53 and 4.13 respectively at 25 0 C..

Abstract: The inhibitory effect of Leaf Extracts of utazi (Gongronemalatifolium) (LEGL), eggplant (Solanummelongena) (LESM), vegetable fern (Athyriumesculentum) (LEAE) and Oji-awusa (Cola acuminate) (LECA) on the corrosion of aluminium in 1.0 M HCl were investigated at the following temperatures: 30oC, 40oC, and 50oC. The experiment was carried out with same concentrations of the above extracts using weight loss method. Some key performance indicators such as percentage inhibition efficiency (IE%), Corrosion rate (CR) and the adsorption properties at different temperatures were monitored and compared. The trend of the percentage inhibition efficiency obtained showed that LECA > LEAE > LEGL > LESM at 50%v/v concentration, and LESM> LEGL > LEAE > LECA at 30oC, LEAE > LESM > LECA > LEGL at 40oC, and LECA > LEAE > LEGL > LESM.........
