Abstract:Transition metal chelates of the type M [NQO] 2 where M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu: NQO = 1, 2 napthoquinone dioxime have been synthesized. All chelates have been characterized by modern methods such as elemental analysis, FTIR, Electronic spectra and X-ray diffraction. The chelates of manganese and copper have shown triclinic structures. Scanning electron microscopy of chelates were carried out. Their particle sizes are in the range of 15-42 nm. The ligand and the metal chelates have been screened for antimicrobial activity on gram positive and gram negative bacteria and fungi and the results are compared with cisplatin as standard chemotherapy agent..

Abstract: This study intends to validate the local use of cassia alata in the management of diabetes by quantitatively analyzing the phytochemicals present and its effect on blood sugar level and the histology of destroyed pancreatic islet cells.

Abstract: Lateral facial photographs of 276 Ibo subjects (184 males and 92 females) and 201 Yoruba subjects (106 males and 95 females) were taken with a digital lens camera. The aesthetic angles were traced out from the photographs and measured. The Ibo males had mean values of 37.80±0.45 for nasofacial angle, 127.10±0.55 for nasofrontal angle, 76.1±0.89 for nasolabial angle 125.90±0.39 for nasomental angle and 88.6±0.33 for mentocervical angle. The Ibo females had mean values of 36.30±0.37 for nasofacial angle, 131.70±0.53 for nasofacial angle, 82.5±1.45 for nasolabial angle, 125.10±0.92 for nasomental angle and 87.50±0.65 for mentocervical angle. The Yoruba males had mean values of 37.30±1.76 for nasofacial angle, 127.90±0.69 for nasofrontal angle, 77.00±128 for nasolabial angle, 125.60±0.54 for nasomental angle and 85.90±0.68 for mentocervicial angle. The Yoruba females had mean values of 35.50±0.38 for nasofacial angle, 134.30±0.57 for nasofrontal angle, 84.00±1.360 for nasolabial angle, 126.80±0.68 for nasomental angle and 85.60±0.71 for mentocervical angle. Abstract: The study was undertaken to assess the efficacy, safety and acceptability of ormeloxifene in the medical management of Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding (DUB). Sixty women with DUB were given ormeloxifene 60mg twice a week for 12 weeks and once a week for next 12 weeks. Follow up was done at 3 and 6 months. The primary outcome measures were menstrual blood loss, hemoglobin concentration and endometrial thickness. The secondary outcome measures were the acceptability and side effects of ormeloxifene. There was a significant reduction in the menstrual blood loss as measured by median PBAC scores pre and post treatment. The median PBAC score was significantly reduced from 334 to 111 after 3 months and to 32 after 6 months (p < 0.0001) The mean pretreatment Hb concentration was significantly increased from 9.04gm% to 10.01 gm% at 3 months and to 10.86 gm% at 6 months (p<0.0001).The mean pretreatment endometrial thickness was reduced from 11.35mm to 9.4 mm after 3 months of therapy and to 8.13 mm after 6 months (p<0.0001). 88.3% women showed marked subjective improvement in symptoms. There were no major side effects. Ormeloxifene, with its convenient dose schedule, is an effective and safe alternative in the management of dysfunctional uterine bleeding.

Abstract: A simple, selective, precise and stability-indicating high-performance thin layer chromatographic method for analysis of Modafinil, both as the bulk drug and in a tablet formulation has been developed and validated. Aluminum foil TLC plates precoated with silica gel 60F 254 were used as stationary phase ethyl acetate, acetone and methanol in the volume ratio of (7:2:1 v/v) respectively as mobile phase. A compact band (Rf 0.42±0.02) was obtained for modafinil. Densitometric analysis was performed in absorbance mode at 232 nm. Linear regression analysis revealed a good linear relationship (r2=0.9995) between peak area and concentration in the range of 80-320 ng /spot. The method was validated for precision, recovery, and robustness. The limits of detection and quantitation were 15 and 50 ng/spot, respectively. Modafinil was subjected to acid and alkaline hydrolysis, oxidation, photochemical and thermal degradation and underwent degradation under all these conditions. Statistical analysis proved the method enables repeatable, selective, and accurate analysis of the drug. It can be used for identification and quantitative analysis of Modafinil in the bulk drug and in tablet formulations.

Abstract:The metabolic changes observed in any physical characters of fruits such as softness or colour change may be a result of changes in the activity of enzymes. The activity of plant polyphenoloxidases can cause enzymatic browning of fruits and vegetables and render food unfit for consumption due to formation of benzoquinone. Proteases degrade polypeptides and facilitate seed germination, leaf senescence, storage and release of amino acids for transport to actively growing regions. Kinetic activity is significant in understanding the process of fruit and vegetable ripening. It is evident from the literature that these enzymes (Catechol oxidase and Protease) have a prominent role in the immunity and defence mechanism.

Abstract: We studied a proband of 23 years female, who had history of primary amenorrhea and was diagnosed with Partial androgen insensitivity syndrome (PAIS), an X-linked disorder caused by mutation in androgen receptor gene. Karyotyping was conducted by analysis of G-banded chromosomes using heparinized peripheral blood sample. The molecular study using PCR for confirmation of the presence of Y chromosome (SRY gene) was performed. Based on the clinical findings, hormonal profile and USG report of the proband, it was confirmed that the proband is diagnosed with PAIS a type of AIS which was further counseled for the better future. Abstract: Mortality and morbidity in bacterial meningitis remain high in children and adults. Previous studies suggested that inflammatory response to bacterial products apparently continues even after the bactericidal effect of antibiotics, resulting in destruction of the host tissue. Previous studies showed that ACTH4-10 synthetic uses melanocortin receptors and it was considered that α-MSH shares the first 13 amino acids sequence with ACTH4-10, ACTH4-10 can be identified as α-MSH exogenous. αMSH has been known to have anti-inflammatory activity. Research method used experimental studies on Wistar rats to compare expression of intracerebral inflammatory through the number of leukocytes in CSS and separated junctions formation between endothelial cells after intracisternal LPS challenge and after intranasal administration of ACTH4-10 .. The control group (n = 18) was given with LPS + Placebo and the experimental group (n = 18) was given with LPS + ACTH4-10. Inflammatory characteristics were measured and analyzed statistically. The results show the number of CSS leucocytes were significantly different (p <0.05) and there was a marked change in separated junction between the two groups (p <0.05). It can be concluded that in this study, ACTH4-10 synthetic administration significantly improved intracerebral inflammatory condition characterized by a decrease number of leukocytes and separated junction formation.

Abstract: Acrylamide, used in many fields, from industrial manufacturing to laboratory work, is also formed during the heating process through the interactions of amino acids with carbohydrate. Therefore, acrylamide poses a significant risk for both human and animal health. This study aimed to investigate if Solanum nigrum (leaves+fruits), vitamin C or melatonin treatment could modulate toxic effect of acrylamide and to evaluate their antioxidant and immuno-stimulant effects. One hundred Sprage-Dawley rats weighing 220-260 gm (M: 336) were divided into 5 groups: 1-control (C), 2-acrylamide treated, 3-solanum nigrum + acrylamide treated group; 4-Vitamin C+acrylamide treated group; 5-melatonin+acrylamide treated group. After 4 weeks, the rats were sacrificed. In the acrylamide treated group, most of the studied biochemical parameter were significantly changed as decreased total protein, Albumin, globulin, IgG, IgM and cholinesterase on comparing with the normal control group. Also urea, creatinine, aspartate aminotransferease (AST), alanine aminotransferase (AST), Alkaline phosphatase (Alk Ph) were significantly increased (P < 0.001). In the co-treatment of the acrylamide infected rats with Solanum nigrum (leaves+fruits), vitamin C, or melatonin the increased levels tend to decrease and vise versa. Therefore, supplementation with Solanum nigrum (leaves+fruits), vitamin C or melatonin can be useful when there is a risk of acrylamide toxicity.

Abstract: Introduction: Lambda-cyhalothrin is a type II pyrethroid insecticide and may cause liver damage. Solanum nigrum may act as hepatoprotective agent; therefore we aimed to study the effect of solanum nigrum (dried fruits or its ethanolic extract) against lambda cyhalothrin toxicity in rats. Materials and Methods: Thirty three male Sprague Dawlay rats were divided into 6 groups (G1: normal; G2 & 3: normal treated with ethanolic extract of the dried fruits, and dried fruits respectively; G4: normal rats intoxicated with Lambda cyhalothrin; G5 & 6: as G2 & 3 but intoxicated with lambda cyhalothrin. At the end of the experiment (6 weeks), the rats were sacrificed and blood was taken for the determination of AST, ALT, Alk Ph, LDH, Hb, Hct, MCH, MCHC and RBC count. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) was measured in serum and brain. Results and Discusion: A significant decrease in body weight, Hb and Hct level was observed in G4 (Lambda cyhalothrin intoxicated rats). The intoxicated groups (G 5 & 6) treated with ethanolic extract or dried fruits of Solanum nigrum showed an improvement of body weight, Hb and Hct where a significant increase compared to G4 but still significantly lower than G1 was observed trying to return to normal or near normal level. A significant increase in AST, ALT and Alk Ph level was observed in G4. Group 5 & 6 showed an improvement of AST, ALT and Alk Ph level where a significant decrease compared to G4, but still significantly higher than G1, was observed trying to return to normal or near normal. Conclusion: Our results demonstrate that S. nigrum fruits or alcoholic extract was able to reverse the pathological parameters and may be useful as an antioxidant and hepatoprotective agent.

Abstract: Poly cystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a complex syndrome affecting 5 to 15% of the females of reproductive as well as premenopausal age. It involves various symptoms related to metabolism and reproductive system. According to Ayurveda it is a disorder of Artav-vah strotus caused by vitiation of Kapha and Vata. In this study a Polyherbal formulation prepared by Unijules life Sciences ltd. is evaluated on 36 patients suffering from various symptoms of PCOS for three months treatment duration. A highly significant result was observed in pain during menstruation, interval between two menses, follicular size and in decreasing the BMI i.e. in obesity also. Overall this study established a good product useful for PCOS without causing any unwanted effects

Abstract: Introduction: Semen culture is a salient diagnostic tool employed in the diagnosis of infection as a tentative cause of infertility. It is also used in the diagnosis of bacterial prostatitis or infection of any of the accessory glands. Semen culture is especially useful when semen is being assayed for use in in vitro fertilization or intrauterine insemination. Studies have shown that male genitourinary tract infections account for up to 15% of cases of male infertility. Materials and methods: one hundred and twenty three (123) semen samples were collected from patients attending the fertility and urology clinics of Eku Baptist Hospital. Samples were produced by masturbation in the laboratory after 3 days abstinence period. 0.1ml of the sample was inoculated onto broth media while 0.1ml was also inoculated on solid media plates. After 24 hours incubation at 370C, 0.1ml of the sample from the broth media was subcultured onto solid media plates. The media plates were read and the bacteria isolates characterized using standard methods. The isolates obtained when only solid media was used were compared with the isolates obtained when broth media was used to supplement solid media. Result: When liquid media was used to supplement solid media in the microbiological culture of the semen sample, a total of 67 bacterial isolates were recovered whereas when only solid media was used, only 16 bacteria isolates were recovered from culture. Conclusion: the use of broth media to supplement solid media is advocated to increase the sensitivity of semen culture.

Abstract: For past many years, strategies for the preclinical discovery and development of potential anticancer agents have been based largely upon the testing of agents in. selected animals bearing transplantable tumors. The feasibility of implementing combined in vitro/in vivo screening for selective cytotoxicity among panels of human tumor cell lines derived from a broad spectrum of human carcinomas has been evaluated in recent times.. Short-term in vitro drug sensitivity assays have raised the possibility of predicting clinical outcome and selecting optimal components for chemotherapeutic protocols for individual patients. This article discusses various in-vitro methods to access cytotoxicity of different drugs in various cultured malignant tissues.

Abstract: To validate the hypolipidemic efficacy of Kadukkai Choornam (Terminalia chebula) in Triton WR – 1339 induced hyperlipidemic rats. Study design: Experimental Study Place and Duration of the Study: Post Graduate Department of Pharmacology, Government Siddha Medical College, Arumbakkam, Chennai – 106, Tamilnadu, India, between August 2012 to December 2012.Methodology: Fresh fruits of Terminalia chebula (Kadukkai) were collected and identified by the botanist. After authentication, pericarp was separated from the fruit and was used for the preparation of Kadukkai Choornam (powder form of pericarp of Terminalia chebula) as per the classical Siddha literature. This powder form was tested against Triton induced hyperlipidemic rats. The experimental procedure was carried out for 7 days. Rats are provided normal diet and water ad libitum..
