Title | : | Gender differences in Foundation Phase learners' literacy achievements |

Abstract: In South Africa and internationally, numerous studies provide evidence of an incessant global pattern of boys' underachievement in literacy relative to girls. These studies focus more on the Intermediate Phase (Grade 4 to 6) and have sparked substantial attention among researchers and policy makers but little is known about the gender gap in literacy achievement in the Foundation Phase (Grade 1 to 3) in South Africa. This study aims to determine educators' views on gender differences in literacy achievement of South African Foundation Phase learners in selected primary schools. Thirteen Foundation Phase educators from five English medium primary schools in Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal were interviewed. The results suggest that in the Foundation Phase girls significantly outperform boys on literacy tasks and that the most critical determinants of girls' superiority in literacy achievement are greater motivation, higher levels of reading enjoyment, greater self-confidence, completion of homework, positive attitudes towards reading and writing, and greater effort and thought when writing. The findings of this study amplify the exigency for the improvement of boys' literacy achievement in the early years of schooling.

Abstract: Although early research on bilingualism warned it as detrimental to cognitive development, several subsequent studies reported on the positive cognitive consequences of bilingualism. Such studies included participants from children to adults from diverse language and cultural contexts. In many of those studies English is found to be mentioned as second language. To bring out a clear understanding about the cognitive benefits for second language English learners, a meta-analysis was carried on 32 studies involving 4161 participants. Data from the studies were extracted and analyzed using Hedge's 'g' as a standardized metric of effect size for group comparisons. Results indicate that bilingualism with English as second language, irrespective of the first language and participant's age / grade status, is positively associated with several cognitive outcomes. Cognitive skills found to have a progressive growth among the bilinguals from early to later grades are attentional control, working memory, metalinguistic awareness, and problem solving. However, evidence is not obtained about progressive growth in metacognitive skills and in symbolic representation and divergent thinking. Finally, the overall results point to the facts that bilingualism strongly influences attentional control, metalinguistic awareness, symbolic representation and divergent thinking and but has minimal influence on metacognitive and problem solving skills.

Abstract: Career decision making stands out as a very significant milestone college students have to make. This has been made difficult by the rapid growth of information technology, industrial growth and job competition. Research has shown that about 50% of post-secondary learners encounter career indecision problems and has become a major issue presented by students for counselling in institutions of higher learning. The objectives of the study were to; identify the career personality types and to investigate the relationship between career personality type and career indecision. The sample size was 250 college students derived using purposive and simple random sampling methods from Machakos University, Machakos Teachers Training College and Machakos Medical Training College. Career personality...

Abstract: Virtual education has exploded during the past few years and become even more centric to the life of university and school worldwide during the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic. Together with the expansion of virtual courses is the increasing concerns about the quality of education it provides and the challenges faced by the teacher and the learner. This article aims to look at the advantages and disadvantages of virtual learning experienced by the faculty and the student. The study took place at the Department of English Languages of Hong Bang International University during Semester 2 of the academic year 2019-2020, based on the survey with 205 students and 16 lecturers. Deriving as a contingent solution to provide the instruction to students during the pandemic time, virtual courses have been recognized by more than 82% participants for their positive impacts on the student's learning experience. The two most critical issues that raise concerns are digital division and the lack of social skills among students in virtual learning environment
