Abstract: Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is a highly infective human pathogen which infects a wide range of population in North America and worldwide. HSV-1 infection has two phases, lytic and latent. Recurrence of HSV-1 is a major challenge to clinicians to control the infection especially in immune depleted individuals. Acyclovir (ACV) is an antiviral drug used to treat HSV-1 infection. Low solubility of ACV in water, mutation of viral thymidine kinase, and mutation of viral DNA polymerase are major problems that cause usage limitations of ACV. Myrrh has been used as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory natural product in middle eastern countries for centuries. Recently Myrrh has shown a promising therapeutic action against fungal and parasitic infections. In the current study, low concentrations of Myrrh treatment increased cell survival of HSV-1 infected Vero cells. Prolonged exposure to Myrrh was found to be toxic to viable cells. Myrrh treatment of HSV-1 infected Vero cells was compared with ACV treatment of HSV-1 infected Vero cell. Myrrh treatment increased cell survival of infected Vero cells, similar to the effect of ACV treatment. These results provide evidence that Myrrh exerts antiviral effects against herpes virus infection..

Abstract: Maranthes glabra (oliv.) prance (Chrysobalaceae) is used in Congolese folk medicine to treatinflammatory diseases.We aimed to investigate toxicity and mechanisms of actionregarding the use of the bark ethanolic extract of M. glabra. Materials and methods: Toxicity was determinate in vitro using the keratinocytes HaCaT line without LPS. Cellswere treated with 0.5 to 250μg/mL of the plant extract. Cell viability was assessed by MTT colorimetricassay. The production of cytokines by HaCaT cells, in the LPS presence and after treatment by plant extract, was also determined in the supernatantsto elucidate the impact of the plant extract on the expression of proinflammatory cytokines TNFα and IL-1β.....

Abstract: Biological evaluation of antihyperglycemic activity of Ocimum sanctum leaves in alloxan induced diabetic rats was carried out. Preliminary phytochemical analysis indicated the seeds extract of Ocimum sanctum leaves contain sterols, flavonoid glycosides, carbohydrates, phenolics and tannins. MEOC (200 mg/kg) showed significant decrease in serum glucose level at 2, 4 and 6 h. Continuous treatment with MEOC (200 mg/kg) for a period of 28 days showed a significant decrease in the serum glucose level in diabetic rats. Maximum reduction of serum glucose level in acute and subacute study occurred at the dose of 200 mg/kg. Subacute treatment for 28 days with the MEOC in the treated doses brought about improvement in body weights indicating its beneficial effect in preventing loss of body weight in diabetic rats. The ability of MEOC to prevent body weight loss seems to be due to its ability to reduce hyperglycemia. Thus it may be concluded that the methanolic extract of leaves of Ocimum sanctum is endowed with significant Antihyperglycemic activity justifying its use in traditional system of medicine....

Abstract: The study of intestinal microflora was carried out in 113 premature newborns (gestational age at birth was from 27 to 32 weeks, body weight was from 780 to 1495 g). The main group consisted of 91 infants with infectious and inflammatory diseases (IID): pneumonia, tracheobronchitis, meningitis, omphalitis. 22 infants were conditionally healthy (without IID) and made up the control group. On the 7th - 10th day of life, all infants had disorders in the composition of the intestinal microflora. However, in infants with IID, these disorders were more pronounced than in conditionally healthy infants. Infants of the main group received the probiotic from 7-10 days of life. Positive dynamics of clinical status and in the composition of intestinal microflora was noted in all infants in this group after treatment and was approached the indicators of infants in the control group. Long-term violations of the intestinal microflora both in conditionally healthy newborns and in premature infants with IID are a basis....
