Abstract: Purpose Excessive blood loss and subsequent blood transfusions in orthopedic procedures have been associated with considerable morbidity and mortality. The primary objective of this study was to determine the incidence of perioperative blood transfusion after hip or knee arthroplasty with the use of tranexamic acid (TXA) versus standard of care. Methods: Any adult patient who underwent a total hip or knee arthroplasty between October 1, 2012 and September 30, 2015 was eligible for inclusion. Patients received 1000 mg of intravenous tranexamic acid preoperatively. Results.........

Abstract: In this research, Plasma physics and digital image processing technique are utilized. Dielectric Barrier Discharges (DBD) plasma at atmospheric pressure is used for the purpose of studying the plasma effect on the blood tissue, The first order statistical features are used to study the effect of plasma on the blood tissue. Different samples are used to reach the aim of this paper: the patients have leukemia and their leukocytes number is abnormal. By studying the results of statistical features (Energy, Mean, Entropy, Skewness, Kurtosis), it is concluded that the blood cells of the sample shows a good response to the cold plasma. So the plasma can be used as a treatment for the blood tissue for the persons with Leukemia............

Abstract: Introduction: The irrational use of OTC medicines is a challenge in both developed and developing countries. In Saudi Arabia, the misuse of a variety of analgesics is common among high school and university students. Amongst medical students Panadol (Acetaminophen) is the most commonly used analgesic and also one of the most frequently used drugs for self-prescription. In this study, the Knowledge, Attitudes & Practices (KAP) towards OTC use/misuse of Panadol in undergrad students of Taif medical college was explored. Aim& methodology: To study the KAP of medical students in Taif city about the use/misuse of Panadol.KAP of 142 male and 139 female medical students from 2nd, 3rd and 4th year was assessed using a structured questionnaire about the use/misuse of Panadol............

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of twelve weeks Gum Arabic dose on the liver functions and some antioxidant enzymes activity of 10 Sprague-Dawley rats. Methods: 10 normal Sprague-Dawley rats were fed one liter 10% of gum Arabic solution daily for 12 weeks. As a control group another 10 rats were not fed with gum Arabic. On week twelve, blood samples were collected from each rat and all of them were killed and the liver was obtained. Some of the liver was homogenized and the supernatant was collected. The liver function tests (direct bilirubin, total bilirubin, albumin, total proteins, Asparate transaminase, alanine transaminase and alkaline phosphatase)............

Abstract: This study aims to determine some heavy metals such as lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) content in traditional eye cosmetics known as kohl, which is available in Tripoli markets in Libya. An analytical test was performed for ten kohl samples using flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AA280-FS). The overall mean (n= 6) concentration for each heavy metal was analyzed. The results of nine kohl samples (2-10) showed that the concentrations of lead and cadmium in these samples were within the range of 12.92-76.14% and 0.36-16.87% respectively. These high concentrations of Pb and Cd were over the safe limits set by the world health organization standards (WHO-2012/FAO-2013)............

Abstract: Urinary tract infections (UTI) are among the most common infections in humans worldwide, E. coli strains in particular are responsible for 80% of the UTI cases. Therefore, the study aimed to investigate the antimicrobial activity of Rosemary essential oil (EO) and three most antibiotics used for UTI treatment as well as determine the best combinations between the EO and these antibiotics against E. coli isolated from urine samples. The ability to form biofilm formation was performed and antimicrobial activity for antibiotics and rosemary EO were investigated by minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) in broth microdilution method. The results showed that all isolates had the ability to produce biofilm (100%)...........

Abstract: Use of herbal remedies in pregnancy may be deleterious to both mother and fetus. Against this background, aqueous and ethanol root bark extracts of Salacia lehmbachii, widely used herbal remedies for treatment of malaria in some localities were evaluated for embryotoxicity and teratogenicity in albino rats. One hundred and five pregnant rats weighing 170-180g were assigned 7 groups (n=15), labeled Control, 1-6. Control rats had 2 mL of distilled water. Groups 1, 2 and 3 received 250, 500 and 750mg/kg body weight of aqueous extract respectively while groups 4, 5 and 6 had similar doses of ethanol extract. Administration was orally on days 1 to 6 of gestation for implantation studies and days 7 to 15 for teratogenicity...........

Abstract: Fresh water snails in Jakara dam were investigated for different types of cercariae. Snails were collected from different parts of the dam in Minjibir, Ugoggo and Gezawa local government area between October 2016 and January 2017 by hand picking only and placed separately in compartmented petridishes for cercarial shedding. Result showed that twenty one snail species from two families comprising Lymnaeidae and Planorbidae were encountered. Bulinus species collected are B. globosus morelet, B. reticulatus, B. truncatus rohlfsi, B truncatus truncatus Egypt, B jousseammei, B. succinoides and B. camerunensis. Fourteen species of Lymnea were encountered from different parts of the dam............

Abstract: Aging is a multifaceted process and involves cell senescence and apoptosis. Some key processes which may be involved could be the persistantmorphological changes in the cell structure for e.g cell blebbingand the role of physiological stressors. Amongst these are the macrophages which are on the front line of host defense. They possess an array of germline-encoded pattern recognition receptors/sensors (PRRs) that recognize pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) and which activate downstream effectors/pathways to help mediate innate immune responses and host defense. Innate immune responses include the rapid induction of transcriptional networks that............

Abstract: Angina, is the term used for chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart muscle. Angina is typically described as squeezing, pressure, heaviness, tightness or pain in chest. Aspirin, also known as acetyl salicylic acid (ASA) is a medication used to treat pain, fever and inflammation. Aspirin is also used long term to help prevent heart attacks, strokes and blood clots in people at high risk. Elevated levels of C- reactive protein, a marker for systemic inflammation, have been found among individuals with stable and unstable angina. Elevated circulating levels of C- reactive protein, an inflammatory marker, increase the risk of thrombotic cardiovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction.

Abstract: The use of Gladiolous psittacinusplant in traditional medicine is drastically increasing across the country Nigeria. This study was therefore conducted to evaluate the safety level of G. psittacinus using acute toxicity test (determination of median Lethal Dose; LD50) and the Brine shrimp lethality assay (BSLA). Histopathological analysis of the liver of rats orally administered with different dosages of G. psittacinus (1600, 2800 and 5000 mg/kg body weight) was also conducted. Results revealed amedian lethal dose (LD50) of the aqueous extract of G. psitticanus as 2116.60 mg/kg body weight. Similarly, the lethality concentration (LC50) of methanolic extract of G...............

Abstract: Saprophytic, endophytic and pathogenic Alternaria have been isolated from a wide range of environments. Endophytic fungi from Brazilian "restingas" have not been studies to date. Here endophytic Alternaria isolates from a range of restinga plants were investigated. One hundred and fifty seven plant species were screened, from which 71 endophytic Alternaria isolates were provisionally identified. Nineteen isolates were selected for DNA sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. All 19 isolates were confirmed as Alternaria with a division into two distinct clades. Seventeen of these isolates were screened for anti-fungal activity against 4 species of plant pathogenic fungi........
