Title | : | Trismus- An Old Concept for Success full Treatment in The Present Era – Case Reports |
Country | : | India |
Authors | : | Prof.Dr Amit Ray || Dr Partha Sundar Biswas || Dr Abhisek Chatterjee |
Abstract: Trismus, a tonic contraction of the jaw-closing muscles, has now received broader application in use, including all conditions characterized by the inability to open the mouth adequately. There are so many pathological conditions which causes trismus. One of the main cause is inflammation of masticatory muscle due to infection and trauma. Historically Esmarch was first one to perform osteotomy for TMJ ankylosis in 1851. A flap of masseter and medial pterygoid sutured and interposed between a wedge shaped osteotomy cut at angle of mandible and will act as a pseudojoint.

Title | : | Microbiological Profile and Antibiotic Sensitivity Pattern In Community Acquired Urinary Tract Infection: Study From A Tertiary Care Hospital |
Country | : | India |
Authors | : | Pradip Kumar Behera || Krishna Padarabinda Tripathy || Surya Narayan Mishra || Ranjita Panigrahi |
Abstract: Background: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the common infections encountered by the clinicians. Though a good number of antimicrobial agents are available, still UTIs have become difficult to treat due to development of resistance by the uropathogens. So regional data regarding the common uropathogens and their sensitivity pattern is required to guide the clinicians to start empiric therapy while managing UTIs. Objectives: The aim and objective of this study was to detect the common organisms causing community acquired UTI in our region which is a part of Eastern India and their sensitivity and resistance pattern towards different commonly used antimicrobial agents...............

Abstract: Transitional cell carcinoma of the ovary is a rare variant of epithelial ovarian cancers(EOC).It has been described as a primary ovarian carcinoma with definite urothelial features but no benign, metaplastic and/or proliferating Brenner tumor (BT) identified. Recognition of such tumors is important because of its rarity, favorable response to chemotherapy and an improved patient survival. Treatment comprised multimodality approach using surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Surgery remains the mainstay of the treatment of this variant of EOC. Postoperative adjuvant radiotherapy improved local control in patients with adverse prognostic factors. Adjuvant radiotherapy improves outcome in patients with adverse factors.

Title | : | Accuracy in Diagnosis of Acute Appendicitis by Comparing Serum C - reactive protein Measurements and Modified Alvarado Score |
Country | : | India |
Authors | : | Dr Joel Mathew John || Dr K.N. Rajan Babu |
Abstract: Acute appendicitis is perhaps the most common surgically correctable cause ofacute abdominal pain and its diagnosis remains difficult in many instances. Some ofthe signs and symptoms can be subtle to both the clinician and the patient and may notbe present in all the instances. Arriving at the correct diagnosis and decreasing therate of negative appendicectomy is essential. However a delay in diagnosis may allowprogression to perforation and significantly increase the morbidity and mortality.This study was a prospective study and comprised 60 patients admitted with suspected acute appendicitis and planned for Appendicectomy. The patients selected were older than 15 years, of either sex............

Country | : | India |
Authors | : | Ruth Priya Senthiappan || Smitha Bhat |
Abstract: Dengue is the most important viral vector transmitted disease world wide in terms of morbidity and mortality. According to WHO around 5,00,000 cases of DHF(Dengue hemorrhagic Fever) and DSS(Dengue Shock Syndrome) occur annually with 22,000 deaths. It is found that some individuals have only undifferentiated fever while others progress to DHF. Our study is an attempt to find out the factors that determine the severity of dengue in our population. Among the 50 individuals with dengue fever that were studied those with hypertension, diabetes, renal failure and alcohol abuse tended to have severe dengue

Authors | : | Dr Kumar Pankaj Shah || Dr M Rajkumar || Dr S Senthur Raja Pandian || Dr C Dharmaraj |
Abstract: Acute organophosphate poisoning is one of the commonest poisoning and have reached epidemic proportion in most parts of the world especially in developing countries, where the toxicity of poison and its medical management is lacking and leads to its high fatality rate. Their ease of access and socio-cultural factors play important role in the choice of OP as a self-poison and the incidence is higher in younger, economically active group with a case fatality ratio of 20. According to WHO, world wide estimates of pesticide poisoning number 3 million each year, with 2 million hospitalized from suicide attempt and 2,20,000 death, the majority of which are actually intentional.Poisoning due to occupational exposure, accounted for about one fifth of the incident with a fatality ratio of less than 1. More than 90% of the non-occupational incidents were suicidal, with a fatality ratio more than 10% and the majority of the subjects are young male.

Title | : | Assessment of empirical antibiotic therapy in a tertiary-care hospital: An observational descriptive study |
Country | : | India |
Authors | : | Antony GK || Manjaly JP || Mukhtar L || Alva JP |
Abstract: Background: Empirical antibiotics when employed in clinical practice should be supported with culture results or valid clinical signs/symptoms. Modification of the empirical regimen is recommended when warranted in order to control antimicrobial overuse and resistance. This study aimed to assess the frequency of starting empirical intravenous antibiotics, the characteristics of this empirical regimen and the clinical characteristics of the patients at the time of start of therapy. It also sought to determine the change in regimen within the first 5 days of admission based on clinical profile and culture reports...........

Abstract: 50 patients with cirrhosis of liver admitted in SMS Hospital, Jaipur were selected for the study. Ultrasonography was performed in all the cases and diameter of portal vein and spleen size was recorded. Endoscopy was performed in all the selected cases to look for oesophageal varices. Out of 50 patients 40(80%) had oesophageal varices at the time of presentation. Average Spleen size in variceal group (14.69±1.08)cm was higher than in non-variceal group(12.45±0.65)cm, p<0.01. The average portal vein diameter of patients in nonvariceal group was 11.78±1.58mm and that of patients with varices 14.05±2.26 mm, p <0.01. There was a positive correlation between spleen size and the Grades of oesophageal varices (r=0.6771) and the difference was statistically significant(p<0.01).........

Title | : | A Study of Viral Infections in Renal Transplant Recipients Risk Factors, Clinical Profile And Outcome Analysis |
Country | : | India |
Authors | : | Dr.R.Arul || Dr.P.Praveen Kumar |
Abstract: Introduction: Renal transplantation has become the most effective means of rehabilitating patients with end stage renal disease. In well-established centers, 90% 1 year graft survival and 95% patient survival is achieved. In spite of this, infection occurs more than 60% of renal transplant recipients and being the one of the main cause of death in renal transplant recipients. If the net state of immunosuppression is minimal then an overwhelming exposure only causes the disease. . Routine antimicrobiologic prophylaxis is aimed at common infection i.e. That includes trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole (toxoplasmosis , pneumocystis, Nocardia........ .

Abstract: The financial burden of managing breast cancer is enormous. This financial hardship becomes more worrisome when patients have to pay out of pockets, especially in low income countries where state supports is poor or absent. This study thus determined the extent and effect of the financial hardship in managing metastatic breast cancers in a low income country located in Sub-Saharan African. We prospectively enrolled all newly diagnosed patients with metastatic breast cancers who were gainfully employed or not but could estimate their monthly income........

Title | : | Prevalence of Styloid Process Elongation in An Elderly Turkish Population |
Country | : | Turkey |
Authors | : | Melek Tassoker || Sevgi Ozcan |
Abstract: The styloid process is a cylindrical, long cartilaginous bone located on the temporal bone. The styloid process elongation can be assumed when either the styloid process or the adjacent stylohyoid ligament ossification shows an overall length greater than 30 mm. The purpose of this study was to obtain data for the prevalence of elongated styloid process in an elderly Turkish population. The study sample consisted of orthopantomographs of 100 subjects, aged between 65-90 years. 38 subjects (38%) demonstrated styloid process elongation at least one side. This study has been showed that elongated styloid process is a common radiological finding in elderly people

Title | : | How Much Do Doctors Really Receive from Industry in the United States? An Analysis of Open Payments in 2014 |
Country | : | Washington |
Authors | : | Stephanie Purnell || Sarah Mohamedaly || Christina Lipscombe || Dynell Pinder || Gandhi Vallarapu || Gurpreet Kaur || Dr. Anthony Colon || Dr. Pamela Coleman |
Abstract: Financial relationships between doctors and industry (biotechnology, medical device, and pharmaceutical manufacturers) are common. Payments are made for public speaking, consulting, as well as for research. Due to increased concerns about the nature and implications of these relationships, the United States government enacted the Physician Payments Sunshine Act to increase transparency of the financial relationships between industry and doctors. Industry began collecting and reporting payments made to healthcare professionals through the Open Payments website beginning in 2013. Thus, our study aims to evaluate non-research payments made to physicians in the US by the type of payments, the geographic distribution of payments, and the key manufacturers making the payments in 2014.
