Abstract: The incidence of extended spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL)-producing strains has been steadly increasing during the past few years, and remains an important cause of treatment failures with cephalosporin. This study intended to investigate the antibiotic resistance patterns and gene types of ESBL-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates in Dr. H. Abdul Moeloek Hospital, Lampung, Indonesia.Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates (N=90) collected from various clinical samples such as pus, sputum, blood, wound swab, urine and body fluids were subjected to usual antibiotics using disc diffusion methods according to NCCLS criteria for resistance analysis. To determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and identify the ESBL-producing strains, the isolates were confirmed with........

Abstract: Glomus tumor is a benign tumour arising from the neuromyoarterial plexus concentrated beneath the nail and arises from digital Glomus body. It is more common in females, however extra digital tumours are common in males. It is common in elderly, but can occur in young individuals. Exact aetiology is not known. Common sites within the nail unit are the nail bed, subungual region, nail root and laterally. A 60 year old woman presented with slow growing swelling on the dorsal aspect of great toe for 5years. It was 4X3 cm in size, lying over extensor hallucis longus tendon. It was hard in consistency, lobulated surface with a small cystic area where a discharging puncture wound was present and the discharge was scanty and serosanguinous. The swelling was moving freely side to side with restricted...........

Abstract: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is widely recognized as the most common type of head and neck cancer and is an important cause of death and morbidity . In Indian population, the situation is more alarming since nearly 10% of the cancers that develop annually belongs to this category. Deactivation and unregulated expression of oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes may be involved in the pathogenesis of oral squamous cell carcinoma. The genomic change results in numerical aberrations in chromosomes 17 & p53 gene. The aim of our study was to identify numerical aberrations of chromosome 17, deletion or amplification of p53 gene. This study was performed retrospectively...........

Abstract: The non-traumatic perforations of the small intestine are pathological entities. The primary sources of the perforation might be foreign bodies, inflammatory diseases, tumors, infectious diseases, etc. In most cases intestinal perforation is discovered only by laparotomy and the definitive diagnosis is made only after histopathologic examination. Small bowel malignancies are rare; among them, lymphomas rank third in frequency, being mostly B-cell non Hodgkin lymphomas.Primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the small bowel with hepatitis B presenting as a perforated viscus entity with peritonitis is extremely rare. A 58 year old man presented with pain abdomen and distension. An emergency laparotomy revealed a perforation in jejunum with enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes and mesenteric thickening which required segmental resection and anastomosis. Histopathological examination of the........

Abstract: Thepresence of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is associated with higher cardiovascularmorbidity and mortality, regardless of gender or its clinical form of presentation (symptomatic orasymptomatic). The ankle brachial index (ABI) is a sensitive and cost-effective screening tool for PAD. ABI is valuable for screening of peripheral artery disease in patients at risk and for diagnosing the disease in patients who present with lower-extremity symptoms.Normal cut-off values for ABI are between 0.9 and 1.4. Therefore, ABI can be considered as a generalized atherosclerotic predictor, identifying patients at high risk for developing cardio or cerebrovascular events and should be incorporated into routine clinical practice.........
