Abstract: Background: This article examines educational policy and the efficiency of public spending on primary education in the Brazilian context. It emphasises the significance of evidence-based approaches for enhancing education quality and optimising the use of public resources. The expenditure on municipal education is growing, drawing resources from other areas. In this situation, there is an expansion of the supply of public educational goods, the depletion of other public goods, and a loss of well-being for taxpayers.
