Abstract: The study of superficial palmar arch (SPA) and its variation in human foetuses has been rarely reported .Superficial palmar arch is defined in textbooks as an arterial arcade that lies superficial in the palmar compartment in contact with the deep surface of the palmar aponeurosis. It is formed by the direct continuation of the ulnar artery beyond the flexor retinaculum. It is often not a complete arch, but it is complete if it becomes continuous with the superficial palmar branch of the radial artery.

Abstract: Computed Tomography (CT) guided Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is nowadays considered to be a rapid, safe and accurate diagnostic modality in diagnosis of lung cancer with minimal complication. The purpose of the present study is to find out the correlation between cytology and histopathology and to assess the accuracy of FNAC in evaluation of lung masses. 120 patients were studied for a period of 1 year from January 2013 to December 2013. The cytological features were correlated with histological findings after performing bronchoscopic biopsy or percutaneous core biopsy.

Title | : | Richter's Type Femoral Hernia: Diagnostic Difficulty |
Country | : | India |
Authors | : | Dr. J Janardhan || Dr. K Sreedhar Rao || Dr. P Venkateswar || Dr. K Deepthi || Dr B Bhavya |
Abstract: Femoral hernias are relatively uncommon; however, they are the most common incarcerated abdominal hernias with strangulation of viscous carrying significant mortality. Femoral hernia has often been found to be the cause of unexplained bowel obstruction. Femoral hernias are known for atypical presentations like painless groin swelling, groin cellulitis/necrotizing fasciitis. Diagnosing Richter's femoral hernia is often difficult especially in obese patients. Delay in diagnosis may occur, especially because a strangulated femoral hernia doesn't always present with typical groin swelling and signs of strangulation. We report a case of 58 yr old female presenting with abdominal distension and vomiting since 15days, with a non tender swelling in right groin without signs of strangulation. On exploration, Richter's femoral hernia with part of small bowel wall as content which was gangrenous necessitating resection and anastomosis.

Authors | : | Nazar M || Yunus KK || Anoop K Sankar || Shankar H S Ram || Vijay Radhakrishnan || Aby Madan || Manu MK |
Abstract: 82 men with Benign Prostatic Enlargement(BPE) who underwent TURP were retrospectively analysed for Prostatic volumes and complications related to BPE. The Volumes were measured by Transabdominal USG (TAUS) with 3.5 MHz Curvilinear probe . The mean age , gland size , and PSA were 65.3 yrs , 55.70 ml (range from 21 to 170 cc) and 11.41ng/ml in our study population respectively. Analysis revealed significant correlation of patients age with prostate volume (p = 0.009). PSA and Acute urinary retention(AUR) showed significant positive correlation (p= 0.004). Bladder calculus incidence correlated significantly with Prostate Volume (p = 0.026) rather than , recurrent UTI ,AUR and PVR .Comparison of hematuria (p =0.888) and gland size was insignificant. Upper tract changes with renal failure and Recurrent UTI did not show any significant association with prostate volume. Men with BPE having gland size >50ml measured using TAUS are at increased risk for Spontaneous AUR , Bladder stone formation and Bladder wall changes.

Abstract: Spinal cord infarction is a rare but often devastating disorder caused by a wide array of pathologic states. Anterior spinal artery (ASA) syndrome is a common manifestation of acute ischemic cord infarction. It is caused by hypoperfusion of the anterior spinal artery, leading to ischemia in the anterior two thirds of the spinal cord.1 Patients typically present with acute paraparesis or quadriparesis with impaired bladder and bowel control. We report a case of severe postpartum hemorrhage causing hypovolemia and systemic hypotension leading to spinal cord infarction. To the best of our knowledge, this is first case report of ASA syndrome due to postpartum hemorrhage.

Country | : | India |
Authors | : | Nithisha .T.M || V.K (Brig) Srivastava || Sanjana.S.M || Navneet Srinivas || Leena lawrence |
Abstract: Conjunctival inclusion cysts can be congenital or acquired. Acquired conjunctival inclusion cysts occur mostly following ocular surgery. Conjuctival inclusion cysts cause vision impairment by corneal astigmatism. A 25 years male patient presented to our institute with diminished vision of left eye and swelling over his left upper lid since 8 weeks with a past history of blunt trauma 9 weeks back over his left upper eye lid with a stone. Lid eversion revealed conjuctival cyst in the left upper lid. Complete excision of the cyst was performed and the excised tissue was subjected to histopathological evaluation which revealed a cyst lined by non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium. Following surgery Left eye vision improved from 20/40 to 20/20p after 1 week. Case was followed up for six months and no recurrence was observed. The purpose of the case report is to create awareness regarding the factors leading to conjuctival cyst formation, vision impairment and recurrence after its excision.

Abstract: Childhood immunisation is considered to be among the most effective preventive services, and is therefore critical to monitor and evaluate.1 Uptake of vaccination services is dependent on different factors including knowledge and attitude of mothers.2 Research on parental health beliefs and attitudes often assumes that parents decline immunisation or are simply less knowledgeable without examining their access and utilisation of well-child care.3,4 The other side of the system, that is, the deficiencies on the provider side largely remain unaccounted for. Parental satisfaction with pediatric care is an indicator of provider quality that has been relatively unexplored in relation to childhood immunisation.

Abstract: Ameloblastoma of the mandible is slow growing, locally aggressive and invasive, odontogenic benign tumour which is painless. Patients usually present late after the tumor achieves considerable size to cause facial disfigurement. This tumor comprises about 1% of tumors and cysts arising in the jaws. Radiograph and histopathology help in differentiating the variety of ameloblastoma. The management of ameloblastoma is complete excision along with reconstruction of the bony defect. The authors report a case of a cystic ameloblastoma in a 46 year-old man who was treated by left segmental hemimandibullectomy.

Title | : | Thyroid Function in Pre Ecclampsia |
Country | : | India |
Authors | : | Dr. L. Shanthilatha |
Abstract: During normal pregnancy, there is increased hepatic production of TBG,hCG.hCG stimulates maternal T4 secretion , which in turn inhibits maternal secretion of TSH.so,pregnancy is associated with asymptomatic hyperthyroxinemia. Fetal thyroid begins to form by 5 weeks and becomes autonomous by 12 weeks .As placenta is impermeable to TSH,this T4 is important for fetal brain development,especially in the first 12 weeks. Studies in mice using VEGF inhibitors (anti angiogenic factor) such as sflt-1 have shown substantial thyroid capillary regression and increased concentrations of TSH. It is therefore hypothesized that excess sflt-1,which is implicated currently in the pathogenesis of pre ecclampsia might be associated with reduced thyroid function during last months of pregnancy.

Abstract: Familial Glucocorticoid Deficiency(FGD) is a rare autosomal recessive disease characterised by glucocorticoid deficiency leading to hypoglycemia, hyperpigmentation increased serum levels of ACTH without mineralocorticoid deficiency. FGD is an important differential diagnosis of Addison's disease in children and have isolated glucocorticoid deficiency as a result of defects in ACTH action. Recognition of this entity is important to avoid unnecessary treatments with mineralocorticoids .In this paper we report a case of 6 year old male child with isolated glucocorticoid deficiency on the basis of clinical features and laboratory investigations, patient was given appropriate treatment and responded to the treatment.

Abstract: Oral cavity contains large numbers of microorganisms. Dental plaque is composed of bacteria in a matrix of salivary glycoproteins and extracellular polysaccharides which displays extensive interactions while forming biofilm structures, carrying out physiological functions, and inducing microbial pathogenesis. Our emerging view of the microbial world is one in which individual bacteria exert their influence within communities through producing, sensing and responding to an array of chemical signals.

Abstract: Infective keratitis is one of the leading causes of avoidable blindness in developed nations. Definitive diagnosis is by microbiological culture. So, knowledge of local etiological agents and their susceptibility helps to initiate prompt treatment and control the disease. Aim: To determine frequency of infective keratitis (bacterial and fungal) in patients of Hi Tech Medical College and Hospital, Bhubaneshwar and analyze its characteristics, aetiology, sensitivity patterns, risk factors.

Title | : | The Incidence, Risk Factors and Outcome of Retinopathy of Prematurity at a Tertiary Care Centre in South India |
Country | : | India |
Authors | : | Dr.Samatha P. Shetty || Dr. Jayaram Shetty || Dr. Hrishikesh Amin || Dr. Rathika D. Shenoy |
Abstract:Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a retinal disease that principally affects preterm neonates. It is recognized as the leading cause of preventable blindness and visual impairment in paediatric population, the major brunt of the disease affecting relatively immature newborns. An increase in survival of very young preterm infants, due to the advances in neonatology, have subjected them to the risk of developing ROP.
This study has been undertaken to determine the incidence of ROP, its association with various clinical and social risk factors and also to study the vasculogenesis and outcome of the ROP positive cases detected in the course of screening.

Title | : | Circumferential Embedded Foreign Body: Diagnosis Requires A High Index of Clinical Suspicion |
Country | : | India |
Authors | : | Dr. Gaurav Garg || Dr. Tarunika Gupta || Dr. V.K. Pande |
Abstract: Subcutaneous rubber band foreign bodies have been described particularly in children, when a rubber band is worn around a wrist and is forgotten leading to catastrophic complications. None of the reports described circumferential embedded foreign body in adults. Among two of our cases reported, one of the patient was 54 years old male, which authors think is a first description of rubber band syndrome in adults.
