Title | : | Comparison of bacteriological profile and susceptibility patterns to empiric antibiotics in hospital and community acquired urinary tract infection. |
Country | : | India |
Authors | : | Dr. Kavya S. || Dr. Anuradha K. |
Abstract: Urinary Tract Infection (U.T.I.) is one of the most important causes of morbidity in the general population and is the second most common cause of morbidity among hospital visitors. It has been estimated that symptomaticUTIs result in as many as 7 million visits to outpatient clinics, 1 million visits to emergency departments, and 100,000 hospitalizations annually.[1] UTIs have become the most common hospital-acquired infection, accounting for as many as 35% of nosocomial infections, and they are the second most common cause of bacteraemia in hospitalized patients [2, 3]Uncomplicated UTI occurs in patients without any anatomic or functional abnormality in the urinary tract and may reach, on average, 6.1 days of symptoms, 2.4 days........

Title | : | Complex Femoral Fractures - An Analysis |
Country | : | India |
Authors | : | Dr. B. Nellaiyappan || Dr. P. Ramesh Vyravan || Dr. M. Mohankumar || Dr. R. Doraikumar |
Abstract: Complex fractures of femur often difficult to treat. When the intermediate fragment is split or either level of the fracture is comminuted, the stability offered by most implants is compromised. Conventional closed intramedullary nailing does not provide adequate fixation when cortical contact of the major fragments of the fracture cannot be achieved. Plating of segmental femoral shaft fractures is also an option, particularly when associated with peritrochanteric fractures, but associated with periosteal stripping, increased blood loss, increased operating room time and increased chance of infection..........

Abstract: This was a Retrospective study of ocular injury cases presenting at our tertiary eye care centre caused by dog bite. Analysis of age, sex and social status of the patient, site and extent of injury, type of dog and season of dog bite was done. Thorough wash of the wound with normal saline was considered, Tetanus toxoid,
anti rabies serum infiltration, anti rabies vaccination as per schedule and antibiotics were given with early
repair of the wound by primary suturing. Canalicular tear was identified and repaired by probing it with silicon
tube.Early management of such complex injuries usually gives satisfactory outcome. Prevention strategies should be considered for preventing dog bites.
Key words: Dog bite, facial injury, canalicular tear, primary repair.

Abstract: Glucocorticoids were first introduced in the 1940s and have become a widely prescribed class of drugs. Corticosteroids are widely used in the treatment of a large number of inflammatory and immunologically mediated diseases. The beneficial effects of systemic corticosteroids must be weighed against the probable risks associated with its use and are referred to as "double-edged sword" in the field of medicine.

Title | : | Treatment of impalement injuries of the oropharynx in children |
Country | : | India |
Authors | : | Dr.N.Mariappan |
Abstract: Impalement injuries of the oropharynx and particularly of the soft palate are relatively common in children. Impalement injuries of the soft palate have been reported in patients of all ages, ranging from the newborn to geriatric patients. However, young children, particularly toddlers are most involved in these types of injuries. Children frequently run around with objects in their mouths and when left unsupervised, they may fall and suffer minor oropharyngeal trauma. Safety neglect is the main cause of this type of injuries.

Abstract:The choice of medicinal plant by traditional medical practitioners was not based on knowledge of the plant constituents or phytochemicals, but the search for safer and cheaper remedies. The effect of Moringa oleifera leaf tea bag extracts on Salmonella typhi and Escherichia coli from stool sample was investigated using the agar well diffusion method. Five different extracts were obtained from the Moringa oleifera leaf tea bag. The result shows that the first extraction has the widest zone of inhibition on the two test organisms of 8mm and 3mm respectively. Only the first extraction has effect on Escherichia coli with the zone of inhibition of 3mm. The phytochemical analysis of the tea bag extract showed that it contains saponins, tannins, phenols, glycosides, alkaloids, flavonoids and the absence of reducing sugar. Thus extract of the plant can be used in treating infections caused by these test organisms.

Abstract: Ensuring that studies contribute to refining theory for practice and informing future investigations is an important research outcome. Cook, Brodage and Schmidt'swork asserted that this validation occurs by reviewing researchers' alignment of research elements and their methodological decisions. Guided by their work, the authors analyzed researchers' explanations of how they connected the study's purpose to theory, theory to research questions, research questions to methods, and methods to results in the Journal of Dental Education's educational research publications from 2001 to 2014..............

Abstract: Oral ulcerations are the one among common complaints for which patients attend out-patient clinics and the commonest cause is traumatic injuries. Injuries can result from accidentally biting oneself while talking, sleeping and secondary to mastication. Other forms of mechanical trauma, as well as chemical, electrical, or thermal insults, may also be involved. In addition, fractured, carious, malposed, or malformed teeth, as well as the premature eruption of teeth, can contribute to the formation of surface ulcerations....

Abstract:The present study was conducted to compare the sealing ability of MTA and GIC.
Method: Endodontic treatment was performed on seventy extracted teeth. 4mm of gutta percha was removed from all the teeth. Teeth were divided into two groups of thirty teeth and two groups of five teeth. Group 1 were sealed with MTA, group 2 with GIC, group 3 (positive control)were not sealed and group 4 (negative control) were sealed with amalgam. All teeth were covered with sticky wax and placed in methylene blue for 48 hours and subjected to diaphanisation. The dye penetration was checked through the cleared samples with a stereomicroscope.....

Abstract: Surgical removal of impacted mandibular third molars with primary wound closure may result in postoperative edema, facial swelling, pain, and restriction of mouth opening. The type of closure may be a cause of these complications. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of placement of a surgical tube drain before primary closure with the effects of primary closure alone after removal of fully impacted mandibular third molars. The study group included 25 patients aged above 16 yearsyears with bilateral fully impacted mandibular third molars.......

Abstract: Background: Dermatoglyphics Is A Sensitive Indicator Of Intrauterine Anomalies And Is Considered As A Window Of Congenital Abnormalities And Genetic Disorders. As Surface Characteristics Of The Skin, Epithelium Of Primary Palate And Enamel Originate From, The Ectoderm And Both Develop At The Same Time Of Intra-Uterine Life, Any Damage To The Tooth Is Reflected In Dermatoglypyics. Thus The Aim Of The Study Was To Determine The Relation Between Dermatoglyphics And Malocclusion....

Authors | : | Dr. Karthikeyan S || Dr. Teny Fernandez || Dr. Deepthi P V |
Abstract: Dentures can produce a number of ecological changes in the oral cavity by accumulating microbial plaque on and in the fitting surface of the denture. Denture stomatitis consists of mild inflammation and erythema of the mucosa beneath a dental appliance, usually an upper complete denture. The condition is generally symptomless, but when symptoms are present they may appear as burning sensation, mucosal bleeding and dryness in the oral cavity. In the present review article, the various etiological factors, pathogenesis and treatment options of denture stomatitis are discussed.
Keywords: Denture stomatitis, inflammatory papillary hyperplasia, chronic atrophic candidiasis, candida, oral mucosal lesions.
