Abstract: BACKGROUND: VTE is well known complication of patients with subdural hemorrhage and is well documented in much recent literature with incidence up to 34% in absence of chemoprophylaxis. OBJECTIVE: To find the efficacy of chemoprophylaxis and factors to affecting VTE within 12 hours of SHD. METHODS: This is a Retrospective analysis consisting of patients with subdural hemorrhage presenting to a tertiary care trauma center within 12 hours of injury. These set of patients were compared to another set of matched patients who received Enoxaparin with delayed presentation (24hr to 48 hr). All patients were subjected to CT scan at presentation and base line venous status of lower limbs as per standard trauma protocols. Primary outcome was measured as expanding SDH. Secondary outcome includes craniotomy surgery and mortality.........

Abstract: Nasal vestibulitis (nasal furunculosis) is a localized infection of the hair follicle (hair-bearing nasal vestibule). Most common pathogens include staphylococcus aureus, other gram positive organisms and anaerobes1. Infection in this area can spread locally even intra cranially and causing fulminant life-threatening conditions like septic cavernous sinus thrombosis2. Here we report a case of 4yr old female presented with the history of high grade fever and right side nasal furuncle since 4 days, together with a rare association of bilateral periorbital (preseptal) swelling since one day. The child was hospitalized. Laboratory and radiological investigations were carried out to investigate any possible complications.

Abstract: Introduction: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbation is a frequent cause of hospital admissions. In one-third of patients, exacerbations have no known cause. We studied whether the presence of diastolic dysfunction (DD) in this subgroup of patients is associated with longer duration of hospitalization and more frequent exacerbations. Methods: 89 patients with COPD exacerbation, 67 with Diastolic dysfunction, and 22 with normal diastolic function hospitalized for acute COPD exacerbation between April 2017 and May 2018 were included in the study. Diastolic dysfunction was defined by the presence of relaxation, filling, or distensibility abnormalities of the left ventricle on transthoracic echocardiogram. Results patients with severe stages of COPD had advanced stage of LV Diastolic dysfunction contributing to their symptomatology. Conclusion :Patients with COPD should undergo ECHO routinely to assess LV Diastolic Dysfunction which will help to improve the management of COPD.

Abstract: Introduction: Maternal near- miss is defined as ― a woman who nearly died but survived a complication that occurred during pregnancy , childbirth or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy. A maternal death is one of the most devastating complications in obstetrics. Methods: The hospital based prospective study selecting 58 patients according to maternal near-miss criterias, were analysed in respect to demographical and other outcome parameters. Results: Analysis of the data revealed that most patients in the near- miss group were primiparas(39.7), in the third trimester (62.1%) or in the post natal period (25.9%). 75.9% in the near miss group were unbooked and were referred from a private or district , sub-division hospital. 11% of the patients presented with eclampsia or status epilepticus. Dialysis for ARF was needed in 5.2 % patients..........

Abstract: Objective: To determine the correlation between single voided sample (spot urine PCR) and 24 hours urine protein excretion in patients being evaluated for preeclampsia. This study was conducted in Niloufer hospital and sample size is 100. Methods: A random urine sample was collected after discarding the first morning specimen. A single voided urine specimen was obtained soon after the 24 hour urine collection, before midday. Urine protein was performed on semi automated analyser. Urine creatinine was measured by the Jaffes reaction. The protein creatinine ratio was calculated by dividing the urinary protein concentration by the urinary creatinine concentration and the correlation with the 24 hours urine protein was assessed.

Abstract: Life style changes and urbanization have led to increasing proportions of many lung diseases. In general, with a reduction of regular exercises among young males, the vital capacity tends to decrease. This factor may increase the incidence of obstructive lung disease in the community. Yoga, a tradition, is known to influence lung function tests. The purpose of the present study was to find out the effect of yogic practices on Vital capacity among university men students. The study was conducted on 30 university men students in totally two groups, namely, control & experimental group. Experimental group consisted of 15 university men students. They underwent six weeks of practice in yogic practices whereas the control group did not under go any type of training. Vital capacity was measured before and after the experimentation using the standardized tests. Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) analyzed the data and it was concluded that the yogic practices had significant (P < 0.05) effect on vital capacity among university men students.we suggest a possible addition of regular yogic practices along with the curriculum among university students.

Abstract: Introduction:Preadjusted Edgewise appliance (MBT) has popularized the use of sliding mechanics, which has become the most commonly used method of achieving space closure in orthodontics. In the quest for the most efficient method of delivering constant retractive force to the teeth, NiTi closed coil springs and the elastomeric chains have been the most commonly used modalities. The aim of this investigation was to find out and compare the rate of mandibular canine retraction with NiTi closed coil spring and elastomeric chain delivering 200grams of force with sliding mechanics using preadjusted edgewise appliances.............

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine if preoperative use of single dose of 20mg sublingual piroxicam and 20mg dispersible ketorolac would significantly reduce postendodontic pain, when compared with 600mg ibuprofen following single visit root canal treatment An additional objective was to compare the efficacy of sublingual piroxicam and dispersible ketorolac on post endodontic pain following single visit root canal treatment. A total of 70 adult patients consented to a double-blind, single-dose oral administration of 20mg of ketorolac, 20mg of piroxicam, 600 mg of ibuprofen, before single visit root canal therapy. Each Patient-reported visual analog scale ratings of pain intensity were conducted upon initial clinical presentation and at 6, 12, 24 and 48 hours and 72 h after completion of single visit root canal treatment..........

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Acute appendicitis is the most common abdominal emergency in both the developed and developing countries. This common surgical disease continues to remain a diagnostic problem. This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of the Alvarado score (AS) in the pre-operative diagnosis of acute appendicitis in our setting. METHODS: A prospective study conducted in Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital Sokoto over a three year period from July 2014 to June 2017. All consecutive patients operated during the study period with an initial clinical diagnosis of acute appendicitis were enrolled into the study. Alvarado scores were correlated with intra operative grades of appendicitis and histopathological findings. Sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of Alvarado Scores were calculated. RESULTS: One hundred and eleven patients were studied with a Male: Female (M:F) of 1.5:1 and mean age of 23.89±4.93years. Patients presenting within first 24hours had a perforation rate of 15% as against 41.2% for those that presented after 24hours. The sensitivities, specificities,..............
