Abstract: Objective: A prospective, randomized, double-blind, comparative study was conducted to compare the efficacy of Ropivacaine 0.125% with Fentanyl 2 μg/ml and Bupivacaine 0.125%, both with Fentanyl 2 μg/ml , in labor epidural analgesia and their effect on duration and course of labor. Background: Ropivacaine was introduced as S-enantiomer. In various human and animal studies, it was found to be less cardiotoxic and has high sensory : motor differential blocking property. Both these characteristics are beneficial for labor epidural analgesia. Materials and Methods: Eighty pregnant women of ASA grade I and II, who were primigravida or multigravida, with singleton vertex presentation.....

Abstract: Background: Duplex carotid vascular scan is a non-invasive imaging tool used to evaluate the extracranial course of the common carotid artery and its branches. Its finding has compared favourably to findings at CT angiogram. Considering the prevalence and rising burden of stroke in the Nigerian population, this study set out to derive the normal variables of duplex carotid ultrasound scan for a Nigerian population. Method: The study assessed the extra-cranial carotid artery variables in individuals, who met the inclusion criteria, randomly selected from residents of Egbellu Minita Estate in Obio/Akpor local Government area of Rivers State. Subjects were.....

Abstract: Core tip: Diabetes mellitus is rising to an alarming epidemic level. Early diagnosis of diabetes and prediabetes is essential using recommended hemoglobin A1c criteria for different types except for gestational diabetes. Screening for diabetes especially in underdeveloped countries is essential to reduce late diagnosis. Diabetes development involves the interaction between genetic and non-genetic factors. Biomedical research continues to provide new insights in our understanding of the mechanism of diabetes development that is reviewed here. Recent studies may provide tools for the use of several genes as targets for risk assessment, therapeutic strategies and prediction of complications

Abstract: Spheno-orbital meningiomas represent 20% of adult orbital lesions in neurosurgical settings. They are defined as intraosseous meningiomas at the base of the anterior and middle cranial fossa, involving the sphenoid wings and the orbit associated with a soft tissue plaque component. Complete resection remains a goal despite difficulties and recurrences. We report our experience in the surgical management of spheno-orbital meningiomas. Patients and methods This is a series of 27 patients managed.......

Abstract: Background: Lip prints are the normal lines and fissures in the zone of transition of human lip between mucosa and the skin. The study of lip prints is known as cheiloscopy. Like finger prints lip prints are permanent, unchangeable and unique to each person except in monozygotic twins. They are identifiable as early from the sixth week of intrauterine life. The present study was aimed to determine the prevalence of lip pattern among males and females in Malabar population......

Abstract: Background: As a result of the COVID -19 pandemic, health care personnel from all around the world have joined the fight against this highly contagious disease. The development of specific cutaneous symptoms in health care professionals has been linked to frequent hand hygiene procedures and long term use of personal protective gear (N95 masks, goggles, face shields and double layer of gloves). Objectives: To estimate the prevalence, characterstics and risk factors that led to the development of cutaneous manifestations from personal protective measures and devices. Methodology:A cross sectional multi centered....

Abstract: The esthetic quality of a restoration may be as important to the mental health of the patient as the biological and technical qualities of the restoration are to his/her physical or dental health, thus stressing the importance of esthetics. The research in the field of esthetic and restorative dentistry led to the achievement of the long sought dream of virtually bonding any type of material to the tooth surface. The advances in the restorative materials and bonding techniques have changed the concept of dentistry. These composite materials promise to be the most interesting development of the near future..

Abstract: We report a rare case of osteosarcoma of the left shoulder in a 17-year-old patient who was consulted late at the university clinics in Lubumbashi. An x-ray of the shoulder had been taken and is suggestive of a bushfire image and a biopsy taken was confirmed after pathological examination with conventional osteosarcoma. Preoperative chemotherapy was started but after the second chemotherapy session the patient succumbed to it. The aim of this study is to report a rare case of atypical shoulder osteosarcoma and to discuss the management modalities. The clinical and radiological diagnosis, as well as the epidemiological profile of this pathological entity are discussed. Boys are most often affected by osteosarcoma after the age of 10. His care in Lubumbashi encountered enormous difficulties due to the delay in diagnosis and the lack of a codified treatment protocol. The solution is essentially based on multidisciplinary collaboration.
