Abstract: Introduction: Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is an inherited deficiency that may cause neonatal jaundice, as has been found in several countries and different ethnic groups.G6PD is an enzyme essential for basic cellular functions including protection of red cell proteins from oxidative damage. G6PD deficiency is the most common red cell enzyme abnormality associated with hemolysis as well as with neonatal jaundice and also associated with kernicterus and even death. It is a genetically inherited sex-linked abnormality. Methods: The study was done on 994 clinically icteric babies without other risk factors for neonatal jaundice, admitted in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of GMCH, Guwahati over a period of 1 year. Investigations included direct and indirect..............

Abstract: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a symptomatic disorder of the nose induced by perennial or seasonal allergen exposure causing inflammation of membranes lining the nose, characterized by nasal congestion, rhinorrhoea, sneezing, itching of the nose and/or post-nasal discharge. The prevalence of AR is associated with a variety of environmental allergens and the level of exposure through direct contact, inhalation, or ingestion. It is clear from several studies and guidelines that screening and identification of various allergens in a particular region can facilitate in diagnosing, treating and formulating preventive strategies against AR. Since the preventive strategy and treatment of AR depends on correct identification of clinically relevant allergens in a particular region. This multi centric study was undertaken to evaluate the allergen patterns in patients with severe persistent allergic rhinitis from Central...........

Abstract: A 38-year-old female was evaluated in our outpatient department with complaints of intermittent vague upper abdominal pain lasting for 2 months. She did not report any other Gastrointestinal (GI) complaints and had an unremarkable past history and physical examination. Ultrasound abdomen and CECT abdomen were suggestive of acalculous cholecystitis. 99mTc-mebrofininhepatobiliary scintigraphy showed cholecystitis with severe dysfunction of gallbladder and duodenogastric reflux. We planned for an elective Laparoscopic cholecystectomy and after releasing the omental adhesions, found a toothpick protruding out from first part of duodenum, closely applied to gallbladder wall with surrounding inflammation. We removed the toothpick with Maryland forceps and did cholecystectomy, with suturing of perforation in duodenum. The histopathological examination of gallbladder was reported as acalculous cholecystitis. Acalculous cholecystitis is traditionally thought to occur in patients with serious medical or surgical illness. Foreign body perforation of GI tract is not a recognized cause of acute acalculouscholecystitis. Foreign body perforation can be included as differential diagnosis in young and fit patients with discordant clinical picture of acalculous cholecystitis. species

Abstract: The growing population has set off alarm bells in developing nations including India. Inspite of a well-conceived and implemented family planning programme since 1952, the reduction in population growth has still not reached the desired levels. This study is a pilot study for designing an operational research study in the field of family planning programme with the focus on the contraceptive prevalence rate and its associateddeterminant factors among the rural population which may have an impact on the utility of services provided by government family planning programmes. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted on 300 eligible couples residing in the rural practice area of Government Medical College Patiala. The results showed the modern contraceptive prevalence rate of 58.7% with range of 46% to 72% in various blocks of the practice area This was dependent upon factors like religion, beliefs, age at marriage, type of family, number of living children, literacy status of female partner and the socioeconomic status.

Abstract: Primary Hyperparathyroidism is usually diagnosed as an incidental finding of hypercalcemia in blood tests or due to symptoms secondary to the high calcium. Overt bone disease is an extremely rare presentation. Fractures in hyperparathyroidism are unusual and usually affect the vertebrae. Generally pathological fractures have been described in patients with parathyroid carcinoma. We report a case with benign parathyroid adenoma who primarily presented with pathological fractures of long bones. Excision of the parathyroid adenoma brought the normal biochemistry profile and increases the bone density, this leads to reunion of fracture..

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Congenital uterine anomalies represent a distortion of the uterine anatomy due to maldevelopment of the Mullerian duct system. They occur in 1 to 10% of the population, 2 to 8% of infertile women and 5 to 30% of those with miscarriages.
CASE PRESENTATION: Mrs RM was a 26 year old booked primigravida who was earlier managed as a case of primary dysmenorrhoea. A hysterosalpingography was performed when was about a year into marriage which revealed a uniconuate uterus. She conceived spontaneously and booked at about 16 weeks gestational age. She had persistent breech presentation at term and subsequently had elective Cesarean section. She was delivered of a live male baby that weighed 2.9 kilogram. There was a right unicornuate uterus with a non-communicating rudimentary horn. Both the mother and baby did well and were discharged home. They were also seen at the post-natal clinic after five weeks in satisfactory condition

Abstract: Inter-trochanteric fractures are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in elderly population. They contribute upto 45% of all hip fractures1. Unstable inter-trochanteric fractures in elderly age group are associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality2. Lately the results have improved with internal fixation and early mobilisation. However fracture comminution, osteoporosis and instability often prevent full weight bearing early3. Both direct and indirect forces result in these fractures following fall. Koval4 and Zukerman postulated that Intertrochanteric fractures constitute almost 50% of fractures of the proximal femur. Direct forces act along the axis of the femur or directly over greater trochanter. Indirect forces include pull of the Ilio-psoas muscle on the lesser trochanter and pull of the abductor muscle on the greater trochanter region. Intertrochanteric fractures is often seen in patients over 60 years of age. They are three times more frequent in women than men due to postmenopausal.........
